Why we use triple silver low-E on your facade?

Currently single silver low-E cannot meet the architectural energy saving requirement, the new double silver low-E and triple silver low-E ,in addition to the argon filled glass, triple glazing has decreased the glass U value significantly, especially the passive glass, through argon filled triple glazing with two pieces double silver low-E,the glass Uvalue has decreased to 0.6W/m2.k.Triple silver low-E has been more and more popular, then why shall we use triple silver low-e in your facade?

Why we use triple silver low-E on your facade?

The advantages of triple silver low-E:
1.Triple silver LOW-e IGU has higher transparency and low-E solar shading coefficiency.Based on same light transmittance, triple silver low-E has 15% lower SC than double silver, which is 15% better than single ones.
2.Thermal insulation.Based on same light transmittance, the far infaraed transmittance of triple is 3%,double is 11% and single is 31%.
3.Triple silver low-E has the best cost economy. The costs used by air conditioners for buildings using triple silver low-E is only half of double silver low-E and 30% of single silver low-E.
Morn now offers several different types triple silver low-E for clients:
MWTE58,which is similar as solarban 90.
MWTE70,which is similar as solarban70XL.

How laminated glass is made?

Laminated glass is widely used in glass facade, blustrade, glass fencing, canopy, glass skylight ,etc.As safety glass, laminated glass is made with 2 lites single piece glass and interlayer(PVB or SGP interlayer).
The interlayer can bond 2 piece glass together and keeps glass integrity once broken,it offers high security and avoid hurts.
Laminated glass is usually produced with glass laminating line, then how the glass and PVB interlayer bonded together?
Laminating line consist of glass loading table, glass transmission conveyor, washing and drying machine, glass positioning machine, waliking suction hanger,PVB storage shelf,pre-pressing machine, unloading table, infrared heating autoclave.
Glass is loaded onto the tansmission conveyor through automatic loading table ,after washing and cleaning process, the glass and interlayer was placed orderly, and with pre-pressing process, the PVB and glass is bonded temporary, then glass is removed to the autoclave keeping for around 8 hours to make the PVB and interlayer bonded permanently.
Here is a detailed video showing how laminated glass is made, the video is from China famous laminating line manufacturer-Lewei.Thanks for their detailed introduction and innovation that makes laminating glass a easy work.

What’s the difference between double glazing and triple glazing?

Most glass used in facade is double glazed units, which is made of 1 piece low-E coated glass and 1 piece clear glass, the most common glass combination is 6 low-E+12A+6 clear glass.
If the low-E coating is double silver low e coated, glass U value is around 1.6W/m2.k,for triple silver low-E the U value is same but will with lower Solar coefficient.Evne if we change the 2nd glass to double silver low-E,the U value won’t change much.

With the development of energy saving conscious, triple glazed units is widely used in developed countries ,such as Europe and North America areas, the cold area has higher heat conservation performance.
Compared with double glazed units, triple glazing has much lower U value ,glass made of 1 piece low-E and 2 lites clear glass U value can decrease to 1.2W/m2.k.Of course we have many options to decrease the U value again, such as increasing the iar gap ,fill argon, using warm edge spacer, and using 2 piece low-E glass.
The main difference between double glazed units and triple glazed units is U value, here is the comparison between different combinations.

As shown in above chart, triple glazed units can decrease 20-30% U value, taking advantage of more method, the U value can decrease 100% again ,the glass will be applied in passive buildings.

What’s the thermal conductivity measurement unit?

When evaluating the thermal insulation performance of a glass product,we usually know that clear& tinted single piece glass is 5.84,Single silver low-E insulated glass 1.8,and double silver low-E is 1.55-1.65.The lower the value, the better thermal insulation performance the glass has.
But What does the value mean and the measurement unit?
Actually the measurement unit is W/M2.k,which means watt/square meter/Kelvin,it’s under same confirmed air condition, the heat transfered throught the glass products.
While even this measurement unit, there’re many different conditions depend on different client.

The most widely used condition is American LBNL Ashare NFRC 100-2010 SUMMER standard:
Room temperature: 24°
Outside temperature: 32°
Glazing oriented windward, wind speed: 2.75 m/s
Sky temperature: 32°
Sky emissivity: 1.0
Incident solar power: 0 W/m2
NFRC 100-2010 winter standard:
Room temperature: 21°
Outside temperature: -18°
Glazing oriented windward, wind speed: 5.5 m/s
Sky temperature: -18°
Sky emissivity: 1.0
Incident solar power: 0 W/m2
While in European areas, they use another standard:EN673,there’s no summer and winter difference as there’s not big difference between winter and summer temperature.
Despite W/M2.K,there’s another measurement unit that shows the thermal conductivity :ft2•h•°F/BTU ,which means hour/square foot/°F.
It’s quite different unit.Sometimes clients mentioned glass unit is 0.3,many sales don’t believe this and think it must be incorrect and the glass U v value couldn’t be this low. While what the client mentions is hour/square foot/°F,not W/m2.k.
To transfer the unit, 1hour/square foot/°F =5.68w/m2.k,so don’t make mistake.

FAQ about insulated glass

1.High SC and low SC,which one is better?

Glass with different SC are suitable for different climate areas.Higher SC will decrease the heating costs in winter by allowing more solar energy through the glass, this glass suites for long winter areas.Lower SC value will decrease the solar energy and suits for hot areas, such as middle east,Southeast Asia.

2.What’s the feature of low e glass.

a.High infrared reflective.
b.Low e value, with low capability of absorbing solar energy.
c.Various SC value to match different area requirement.

3.Why low-E glass can reflect solar energy?

There’s silver layers inside the low-E coating ,and can reflect 98% far infrared solar energy just like mirrors. While the adjustable SC can adjust the solar energy that transmitted into the room.

4.What’s reflective glass?

Reflective glass is a kind of coated glass, after coating the glass SC value decrease from 0.98 to 0.2-0.6.

5.What’s the difference between solar reflective glass and low-E glass?

Solar reflective glass limit the solar direct energy through the glass by decreasing glass SC value, while low-E glass limit the far infrared energy through the glass, and low-E glass has adjustable SC value.

6.What’s the energy transmitted the glass?

a.Solar direct energy,SC value means the direct solar energy transmitted the glass, lower SC,better energy saving effect.
b.infrared energy and far infrared energy.Low-E glass can reflect most far infrared energy and the insulating spacer will also decrease the transmittance of energy directly through the glass.

7.What kinds of popular low-E type?

a.Hard coated low-E  with E=0.28,it can be used in single glazing, can be made into tempered glass, laminated glass and insulated glass, but its energy saving performance cannot match off line low-E.
b.Soft coated low-E,also named off line low-E,the best triple silver low-E can reach over 2.2 LSG ,and E below 0.05.

8.Which glass surface shall we place the low-E coating on?

The low-E coating position affect the SC value but has same U value. When low-E coating on surface #3,the SC value will be higher. So in cold areas,it’s recommended to place the coating on surface #3,in hot areas, place it on surface #2.

9.How much UV the low-E glass can barrier?

Low-e coating can obstruct around 25% UV,it cannot resist 100% but can decrease the fading of furniture.

10.What’s the lifetime of low-E coating?

The low e coating lifetime is same as the insulated glass. When the low-e coating is exposed in the air,it will lost energy saving performance within short time.

What’s the difference between XPS, EPS,PU?

For structural insulation panel ,EPS,XPS and PU are mostly widely used core, many clients don’t know exactly what materials they are ,what advantage and disadvantage of different core, here we offer some info:
EPS:Expanded polystyrene.Mixing polystyrene resin with foaming agent, after heating processing, the resin will forming a rigid closed-cell foam.

Structural insulation panels (SIP) WITH OSB and EPS board

XPS:Extruded polystyrene. It is continuously extruded and foamed by a special process. The hard film formed on the surface is even and flat, and the internal closed-cell foaming is continuous and uniform, forming a honeycomb structure.

Structural insulation panels with MGO and XPS board

PU:Polyurethane panels, made of isocyanate and polyether. It is polymerized by high-pressure spraying and on-site foaming under the action of various auxiliary agents such as foaming agents, catalysts, and flame retardants. There are two types of polyurethane foam: soft foam and rigid foam. Soft foam is open-cell structure, hard foam is closed-cell structure.

PUR PANELS
Comparison of XPS,EPS and PUR.
1.Thermal insulation: PU -0.022W/M2.K <XPS 0.029W/M2.K <EPS 0.042W/M2.K
2.Price: EPS <XPS<PU.
3.Temperature resistance: EPS 70℃< XPS 95℃<PU 120℃。
4.Compressive strength: EPS 69 MPA < PU 150Mpa <XPS 200Mpa.
5.Bonding strength:EPS<XPS<PU
6. XPS,EPS and PU all are flame retardant materials.
With above info,we can see that EPS has the best price but every performance is worse than XPS and PU.It’s suitable for low requirement, low energy saving performance requirement and low wind load projects.
PU has the highest price and almost best performance at every aspect,so it’s widely used in high energy saving projects.
XPS has the best cost performance, good thermal insulation, god water and moisture proof ,annd excellent compression performance, easy installation,so XPS is most common materials used in SIP.
